Which Audi models are supported
The instructions will be useful for Audi Q2, S5, A4, A6, A7 and other models released later than 2017. On newer Audi models with a more modern version of the multimedia system, touchscreen and wireless connectivity can be used. However, despite the difference between Audi models, there are no particularly fundamental differences.
You can check supported Audi models on this page.
Just type in the name of your car in the search and you will get a list of all supported AA models with the release date. If your car isn't listed, it was likely released earlier than 2017 and doesn't support Android Auto navigation.
Phone Requirements
We will be using a Samsung S21, however if you have a Samsung S8, S10+, 11 - you can use Android Auto with no problem. If you have Android 9 or higher on your phone, there will be no problem with AA compatibility.
Connecting Android to Audi MMI
Step 1. Use a good quality, reliable USB cable. Plug one end of the cable with the connector into the car's USB port.
It is located at the bottom of the audio system in front of you (usually near the cigarette lighter).
Step 2. Start the car engine.
Step 3. Plug the other end of the cable into your phone. You will see the Android Auto welcome screen on your Audi MMI screen.
Step 4. When prompted, confirm the use of Android Auto and grant access to the phone data.
Step 5. Select Activate Android Auto now option.
As many Audi models do not have a touch screen, you will need to use controllers.
Step 6. Tap the round icon at the bottom left of the screen below the map to access the Android Auto main menu. All apps that are compatible with AA are available on this screen.
Step 7. In the settings, you can customize how notifications are displayed, how the audio player behaves, and change the map colors.
Step 8. To navigate back to Audi MMI, select Audi item from the list of apps, you will be taken to the main menu of the car.
Step 9. Next, tap on Android Auto - you will be presented with Google Maps.
Step 10. You can customize the list of available apps through the Android settings.
To do this,
turn on the phone screen
go to Android Auto Settings via search
check the list of available AA applications
reorganize the list if necessary.
Voice navigation
To use voice commands while navigating, tap the human head icon on the right side of the steering wheel. Press the button for a few seconds and say a command, for example: navigate to Berlin. The desired destination will appear on the map and a route will be displayed in Google Maps.
Thus, you can build a route even without using controllers by saying the desired address out loud. However, this feature is available only if you have an active Internet connection on your phone. In addition to navigation commands, Google Assistant recognizes other commands, for example, what the weather's like today or where the nearest petrol station is.
Thus, we have connected Android Auto to the Audi MMI. If you have difficulties in the process of connection or the connection error is displayed on the screen, read the article. In it we have analyzed the most common errors and offer simple ways to fix them yourself.
